Biography
Jonathan Rose Design was founded to satisfy a passion for design and a desire to develop contemporary furniture for living with today’s physical, cultural and commercial demands.
As an engineer at heart, Jonathan loves to solve problems hands on. Believing that through collaboration, partnership and trust, great things can happen. Jonathan works with other craftsmen to extend my design capabilities and maintain a strong British skills base. He believes curiosity is key to everything new – how processes impact design and how material properties create new processes.
Experimentation and passion are at the heart of his design process. He works to commission as well as designing for small batch production runs
An example of Jonathan’s work is ‘Soft Kist’ shown here. A blanket chest borne out of the need to store bedding in a living space. The idea of a hard material reflecting softness led to continuous curves wrapping around the chest, with graduating levels going from dark to light in a fibonacci sequence. A top curved in two planes means somewhere to sit plus thinning the material from the back to the front means a lid that lifts easily.
It also shows how we adjust and adapt. The chest was the most important piece in a home until the beginning of the 18th century storing belongings and valuables and could be used as a seat.
In times where we need to adjust and adapt, perhaps the chest fitting our 21st century aesthetic is something more important than we thought.
