Biography

HEFT STUDIO is an independent design and craft practice based just outside Edinburgh. It was founded by Helena Robson, a maker and craftsman with a love of Scottish timber. Our work unites traditional and contemporary craftmanship to create beautiful, authentic furniture and homewares.

It is our aim to fill people’s homes with beautiful things that we would want to live with; furniture that uplifts and inspires interiors. Each piece of furniture that leaves the workshop is rigorously thought through and perfected for an individual’s need. Through this attention to detail and dedicated refinement of design the beauty of the materials and the aesthetics of everyday function are united.

HEFT furniture and homewares reflect and respect where they've come from and how they're made. Our design process is led by an understanding and admiration for the natural environment and the traditional skills, processes and materials connected to it. By working with wood, we choose to embrace the elemental and imperfect. Through incorporating evidence of workmanship, we invite interaction and seek authenticity.

HEFT Studio is motivated to contribute towards a world in which good quality, well-designed pieces are thoughtfully and sensitively produced. We design for longevity, consciously crafting heirloom pieces that last for generations. Most of our furniture is made to order, working closely with clients to create exactly what they want for their homes. However, we also create small batches of homewares from workshop offcuts that are released seasonally via our website shop. Wherever possible, HEFT uses sustainably sourced Scottish grown timber and naturally derived wood finishes.
