Having turned his back on a career in arable farming, and graduating from Buckinghamshire Chilterns University, furniture designer John Johnston regrets not starting his career sooner. John grew up on a farm by Longniddry near Edinburgh. The son and brother of architects, he opted to leave farming after 12 years 'because he wanted to do something more individual' Armed with an honours degree in furniture design and craftsmanship, he wants to bring a 'kinder, gentler' attitude towards recycling to the furniture industry. Asked what he would change, John figuratively rubs his hands together and begins: 'I would try to encourage more people to use sustainable local timbers. One thing that does bother me is the amount of waste that is thrown out every week by the medium to large scale side of the production business'. He admires furniture designers 'driven by a vision, who frequently challenge the accepted order of things and are continually seeking change. They offer real alternatives to the mass-produced throwaway society that we have turned into'. Providing a service that culminates in an object that is a joy to own and live with, is what John strives to achieve, in his business.
