Organic Geometry / Messaging Chair

This one was a collaboration piece.

The chair was designed by Anna Hammond, a Product Design post-grad who commissioned me to make it for her degree show and for the London Design Festival.

One of the themes of Anna's degree exhibition is "messaging". The chair has several features that support that, allowing people to leave messages for you if they find you've left your seat for a while:
- It has a writing surface with in-built pencil slot at the top of the back.
- The back-rest is formed from a roll of paper, which can be pulled up to the writing surface.
- The message is then torn off the roll, rolled up and slotted into a round hole in the seat cushion, so that on your return you physically cannot sit down without noticing someone has left you a message.

The chair was based on Anna's original design. Anna and myself agreed some design changes that would increase strength and would better suit the natural wood. The completed chair is in sycamore, finished with teak oil.

It is on show in the Edinburgh College of Art 2009/2010 post-graduate degree show and then in the London Design Festival 2010.
